Case IH 1256 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Control Module Identification Input State Error - Data Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect

Issue description

The engine controller is detecting an incorrect or missing input state on its identification pins. These identification circuits tell the module what specific application or machine it is installed in. The fault can also trigger if there is an incompatibility between the machine's monitor/controller and the engine module, or if an incorrect calibration file was downloaded to the module.

Check the cause

  1. Determine if the ECM was recently replaced or reprogrammed. If a new ECM is connected to the wrong location or flashed with an incorrect calibration, this fault will become active.

  2. Inspect the ECM identification circuit wiring and pins for shorts, open circuits, or corrosion.

  3. Check for moisture in the wiring harness connectors, which can cause erratic data states.

  4. Verify that the ECM and the machine's primary monitor/controller are compatible and communicating properly.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

    Connect a PC-based service tool (such as Cummins INSITE or the Case IH Electronic Service Tool) to the machine's diagnostic port to verify that fault code 1256 (SPN 1563 / FMI 2) is active.

  2. Inspect and Clean Connectors

    Disconnect the ECM harness connectors. Inspect for moisture or pushed-back pins. If moisture is present, dry the connectors thoroughly using an approved electronic cleaner.

  3. Verify Calibration

    Use the diagnostic tool to check the ECM's calibration file. If the calibration is incorrect for the specific Case IH machine configuration, reflash the ECM with the correct software.

  4. Check Identification Circuit

    Test the continuity of the ECM identification pins in the wiring harness to ensure they are providing the correct state (grounded or open) as required by the specific engine arrangement.

  5. Replace the ECM

    If the wiring harness is intact, the connectors are dry, and the correct calibration is installed but the fault persists, the ECM has likely suffered an internal hardware failure on the identification circuit and must be replaced.

  6. Clear Codes

    After repairs or replacement, clear the fault codes using the diagnostic tool and cycle the ignition to verify the fault does not return.
