Case IH 12562 – MTA CCM & APH: Trailer park brake status incoherence

Issue description

The control module is receiving conflicting, inconsistent, or illogical electrical signals regarding the current status of the trailer's parking brake system (e.g., the system cannot determine if the trailer park brake is properly engaged or released).

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH Stage V MR tractors
  • Case IH Farmall series
  • Case IH Maxxum series
  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH Magnum series

Check the cause

  1. Check the Trailer Park Brake Solenoid wiring harness for an open circuit, short to ground (GND), or short to battery voltage (Vbat)

  2. Verify the handbrake switch and handbrake load sensor, as an incongruence here can cause the CCM to read an incoherent trailer brake status

  3. Inspect the in-cab trailer brake release button for unexpected values, open circuits, or shorts

  4. Verify CAN communication to ensure there are no accompanying CAN errors (such as iTBV CAN errors) interrupting the signal from the trailer brake valve to the CCM

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery power

Disconnect battery power before servicing the CCM or trailer brake valve wiring.

  2. Locate the trailer brake valve and park brake solenoid assembly

Locate the trailer brake valve and park brake solenoid assembly (typically mounted near the rear axle or transmission housing).

  3. Test electrical connector

Disconnect the electrical connector to the trailer park brake solenoid and use a multimeter to test for continuity and correct voltage from the CCM.

  4. Repair or replace wiring harness

If the wiring harness is damaged, repair or replace the affected section of the harness.

  5. Replace trailer brake valve/solenoid assembly

If the wiring tests good but the status remains incoherent, the trailer brake valve/solenoid assembly is likely suffering from an internal electrical failure and must be replaced.

  6. Install new trailer brake valve

Install the new trailer brake valve, reconnect the pneumatic/hydraulic lines, and bleed the system if applicable.

  7. Reconnect battery and clear codes

Reconnect battery power and clear the fault codes from the MTA CCM.
