Case IH 1257 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Control Module Identification Input State Error

The engine controller is detecting an incompatible monitor/controller on the network, or there is an internal failure/communication error regarding the module's identification input state. When this code is active, the engine will typically log a red "Stop Engine" light and may refuse to run or experience severe performance derates.

   Check ECM power and ground connections to ensure adequate B+ power supply and a solid ground

   Inspect the wiring harness connecting to the ECM for open circuits, shorts, corrosion, or loose pins

   Verify compatibility of any recently installed displays, monitors, or controllers on the CAN bus network with the current ECM software

   Connect a diagnostic tool (e.g., Cummins INSITE or Case IH Electronic Service Tool) to verify communication with the ECM

   Disconnect battery

   Turn off the machine's ignition and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical shorts.

   Inspect and clean ECM harness

   Disconnect the wiring harness from the Engine Control Module (ECM). Clean the connectors with electrical contact cleaner and inspect for pushed-back pins or moisture intrusion.

   Check for software updates

   Reconnect the harness and battery. Use the OEM diagnostic tool to check for available software updates. Reflash the ECM with the correct engine calibration file if a software mismatch is suspected.

   Determine if ECM replacement is needed

   If the wiring is intact, power/ground is verified, and the software is correct but the 1257 code persists (or if the ECM will not communicate at all), the ECM must be replaced.

   Remove faulty ECM

   Remove the mounting bolts securing the faulty ECM to the engine block and remove the unit.

   Install replacement ECM

   Install the replacement ECM and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the wiring harness.

   Flash new ECM

   Flash the new ECM with the correct engine calibration file for your specific machine.

   Perform throttle calibration

   Perform an electronic throttle calibration (often required following a main power disconnect or ECM replacement).

   Clear codes and test
