Case IH 12591 – Trailer Brake Control Module (ITBV) or XCM (Braking System): Handbrake switch incongruence

This is a plausibility check failure, meaning the electronic control system is receiving conflicting or illogical electrical signals from the handbrake (parking brake) switch circuit (e.g., the system sees the switch as both open and closed simultaneously, or the signal does not match the expected operating state of the tractor).

   Connect the diagnostic service tool to the diagnostic connector, turn the key start switch ON, and navigate the 'H Menu' to verify the active 12591 fault in the Braking stack.

   Inspect the handbrake switch for physical damage, loose mounting hardware, or mechanical binding that might prevent the switch from fully engaging/disengaging.

   Check the wiring harness and connector at the handbrake switch for open wires, short circuits to ground, or short circuits to a 12V power supply.

   Use a multimeter to test the switch's continuity to ensure it transitions cleanly between states without internal shorts.

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and remove the ignition key.

   Securely chock the wheels to prevent the machine from rolling, as you will be disabling the parking brake circuit during the repair.

   Locate the handbrake switch assembly, typically mounted at the base of the handbrake lever inside the cab.

   Carefully disconnect the electrical harness connector from the switch.

   Remove the retaining hardware securing the switch to the handbrake lever bracket and remove the faulty switch.

   Install the new OEM handbrake switch and secure it with the retaining hardware.

   Reconnect the electrical harness connector.

   Turn the ignition key ON and use the diagnostic service tool to clear the stored 12591 fault code from the EEPROM.

   Actuate the handbrake multiple times to ensure the dash indicator responds correctly and the fault code does not return.
