Case IH 12616 – ABS, TCU, or VCU: Rear left wheel speed sensor - frequency > 1.5 kHz
Issue description
The control module is receiving a signal from the rear left wheel speed sensor that exceeds the maximum expected frequency threshold of 1.5 kHz, indicating a sensor malfunction, a short circuit in the wiring, or physical damage/metallic debris on the tone ring.
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors for the rear left wheel speed sensor for chafing, corrosion, or short circuits that could cause erratic high-frequency signals.
Check the physical mounting of the sensor to ensure it is secure and the sensor gap is within specification.
Inspect the phonic/tone wheel (the toothed wheel the sensor reads) for missing teeth, damage, or buildup of metallic debris.
Use a diagnostic tool or oscilloscope to test the sensor's output signal while rotating the wheel to verify if the frequency is genuinely spiking above 1.5 kHz.
Repair steps
Park machine
Safely park the machine on level ground, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Locate sensor
Locate the rear left wheel speed sensor (typically mounted on the axle housing or near the wheel hub).
Disconnect connector
Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor harness.
Remove retaining bolt
Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the sensor.
Extract sensor
Carefully extract the old sensor from its mounting bore.
Clean and inspect
Clean the mounting surface and inspect the tone ring through the sensor hole.
Install new sensor
Install the new wheel speed sensor and tighten the retaining bolt.
Reconnect harness
Reconnect the electrical harness and secure any loose cables with cable ties.
Clear codes and test
Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool and test drive the machine to verify the repair.
