Case IH 12622 – MIU (Machine Interface Unit) or ABS / Drive Control Module: Front left wheel speed sensor - speed jump to zero

Issue description

The control module was receiving a steady speed signal from the front left wheel, but the signal abruptly dropped to zero while the tractor was still in motion (or while other wheel sensors still indicated movement). This condition typically points to an erratic signal caused by a sudden open circuit, a failing sensor, a damaged tone ring, or a wiring harness issue.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the front left wheel speed sensor wiring harness for chafing, breaks, or pinch points, especially near the front axle pivot points.

  2. Disconnect the sensor connector and check for water ingress, corrosion, or pushed-back pins.

  3. Ensure the sensor is securely bolted to the hub, as a loose sensor can cause the air gap to fluctuate and drop the signal.

  4. Remove the sensor and inspect the tone ring (exciter ring) through the mounting hole for missing teeth, damage, or heavy mud/debris buildup.

  5. Use a multimeter to test the sensor for proper resistance and continuity according to the service manual.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the tractor on a flat, level surface. Engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the front left wheel speed sensor, typically mounted on the front axle hub or steering knuckle assembly.

  3. Disconnect the Harness

    Unplug the sensor's electrical connector from the main tractor harness.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Remove the retaining bolt (usually a hex or Torx bolt) holding the sensor in place. Carefully twist and pull the sensor out of the hub. Note: If it is seized, use penetrating oil and gently work it back and forth to avoid breaking the plastic housing inside the hub.

  5. Clean the Port

    Thoroughly clean the mounting surface and the sensor bore to ensure the new sensor seats perfectly flat. (Failure to do so will result in an incorrect air gap and immediate return of the fault code).

  6. Install the New Sensor

    Insert the new wheel speed sensor into the hub.

  7. Secure and Route

    Install and tighten the retaining bolt to OEM torque specs. Reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring it is secured with cable ties away from moving suspension or steering components.

  8. Clear and Test

    Connect a diagnostic tool to clear the 12622 fault code from the MIU/ABS module. Test drive the tractor to verify the MIU is reading a consistent speed from the front left wheel.
