12626

Case IH 12626 – ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) Control Module or TECU (Tractor Electronic Control Unit) / Frame ECU: Front left wheel speed sensor - air gap

Issue description

The physical distance (air gap) between the front left wheel speed sensor and the tone ring (exciter ring) on the axle is out of specification (typically too large). Because the gap is too wide, the sensor cannot generate a reliable alternating voltage output to accurately read the wheel's rotational speed.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH Optum series
  • Case IH Magnum series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the front left wheel speed sensor and the tone ring for heavy mud, debris, or metallic shavings that could interfere with the magnetic field.

  2. Physically check the sensor to see if it has backed out of its mounting bore, causing the air gap to become too large.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and the 3-pin connector leading to the front left wheel speed sensor for corrosion, intermittent contact, or physical damage.

Repair steps

  1. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the front left hub area, specifically around the wheel speed sensor and tone ring, to ensure no debris is causing the signal loss.

  2. Adjust the Air Gap

If the sensor has backed out, carefully push the sensor inward until it seats properly against its stop to correct the air gap.

  3. Test the Sensor

Turn the key on and monitor the wheel speed via the tractor's diagnostic display (or EST tool) while rotating the wheel. If the signal returns, the issue was purely mechanical displacement.

  4. Replace if Faulty

If adjusting the air gap does not clear the fault, or if the sensor head is physically damaged/worn down by contact with the tone ring, disconnect the sensor's wiring harness.

  5. Install New Sensor

Remove the retaining bolt, pull the old sensor out, and install the new wheel speed sensor. Ensure it is pushed in fully to establish the correct factory air gap.

  6. Clear Codes

Clear the fault memory in the TECU/ABS module and test drive the tractor to verify the repair.
