Case IH 12630 – ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) Module or Primary Hydraulic Power System / Vehicle Control Module: Front left wheel speed sensor - air gap (no signal)

The control module is not receiving a valid rotational signal from the front left wheel speed sensor. The physical distance between the sensor's magnetic pickup and the tone ring is likely out of tolerance, or there is a complete loss of signal due to an open circuit, sensor failure, or heavy debris blocking the magnetic field.

   Inspect the front left wheel hub area for heavy mud, metallic debris, or ice packed around the sensor that could disrupt the magnetic signal

   Verify that the sensor is fully seated in its bore and the mounting bracket is not bent, ensuring the air gap is not too large

   Inspect the tone ring (pole wheel) through the sensor bore or by removing the hub to check for missing teeth, cracks, or excessive runout

   Disconnect the sensor and check the wiring harness leading back to the ECU for chafed wires, corrosion in the connector, or an open circuit

   Monitor wheel speed parameters using the Case IH EST laptop while driving slowly to see if the signal is erratic or completely dead

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the battery disconnect switch.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the front left wheel speed sensor on the inboard side of the front left axle/hub assembly.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor harness. Inspect the chassis-side connector for moisture or bent pins.

   Removal

   Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor. Carefully twist and pull the sensor out of its mounting bore. Note: If the sensor is seized due to rust, use penetrating oil and gently work it back and forth to avoid snapping it off inside the housing.

   Clean the Bore

   Thoroughly clean the mounting surface and the bore. This is critical: any rust or dirt left on the mounting pad will prevent the new sensor from seating fully, recreating the 'air gap' fault.

   Installation

   Insert the new sensor. Do not use excessive force. Install and tighten the retaining bolt to OEM torque specs.

   Reconnect and Clear

   Reconnect the wiring harness. Turn on the battery power, connect the diagnostic tool, clear the 12630 fault code, and test drive the tractor to ensure the wheel speed registers correctly.
