Case IH 12638 – Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) or Transmission/ABS ECU: Front left wheel speed sensor - wheel diameter incorrect

This code indicates that the control module is detecting an implausible speed signal from the front left wheel speed sensor. The system calculates expected wheel speed based on the programmed wheel diameter in the tractor's configuration. If the actual rotational speed detected by the sensor does not match the expected mathematical value, this code is triggered.

   Verify Programmed Wheel Diameter: Access the tractor's configuration menu (via the AFS Pro display or diagnostic tool) and check the programmed wheel diameter. Ensure it exactly matches the physical front tires installed on the tractor.

   Check Tire Pressure and Wear: Ensure both front tires are the exact same size, have matching tread wear, and are inflated to the correct, equal pressure. A severely underinflated tire has a smaller rolling diameter, which can trigger this code.

   Inspect the Sensor and Tone Ring: Inspect the front left wheel speed sensor for physical damage, loose mounting, or a buildup of mud/metallic debris.

   Test the Wiring Harness: Check the wiring harness and connector leading to the front left wheel speed sensor for chafing, corrosion, or a broken circuit.

   Update Configuration (If Applicable)

   If the fault was caused by a recent tire change, simply update the wheel diameter setting in the AFS display to match the new tires and clear the code. If the setting is correct, proceed to sensor replacement.

   Prepare the Machine

   Park the tractor on a hard, level surface. Engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and safely lift and support the front left axle.

   Disconnect the Sensor

   Locate the front left wheel speed sensor on the steering knuckle/hub assembly. Disconnect the electrical connector and inspect the pins for corrosion.

   Remove the Sensor

   Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place. Carefully pull the sensor straight out of the housing.
