Case IH 12647 – ABS Module / Trailer Brake Control Module: P2 Exhaust Solenoid electrical error
Issue description
This fault code indicates an electrical malfunction (such as an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power) in the circuit for the P2 Exhaust Solenoid, which is responsible for exhausting air pressure from the brake circuit.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Puma 145
- Puma 150
- Puma 185
- Puma 240
- Magnum MX200-270
- Maxxum
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors running between the ABS/Trailer Brake ECU and the pneumatic trailer brake valve assembly for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.
Disconnect the P2 Exhaust Solenoid and measure the resistance of the coil using a multimeter to check for an internal open or short circuit.
Check for proper voltage at the solenoid connector when the brake system is commanded (this may require the Case IH Electronic Service Tool to actuate the valve).
Inspect the pneumatic trailer brake valve assembly for physical damage, air leaks, or water ingress that could have shorted the electrical solenoid.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery or turn off the battery isolator switch to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Valve
Locate the pneumatic trailer brake control valve / ABS modulator valve assembly (typically mounted on the chassis near the rear axle or adjacent to the air tanks).
Disconnect
Carefully disconnect the electrical connector from the P2 Exhaust Solenoid.
Wiring Repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring, repair the harness using OEM-approved waterproof splices and heat shrink.
Component Replacement
If the solenoid coil itself failed the resistance test, replace the solenoid. Note: On many Case IH pneumatic brake valves (such as those made by WABCO or Rexroth), the solenoids are not serviced separately, requiring the replacement of the entire Trailer Brake Control Valve assembly.
Reassembly
Install the new valve/solenoid, reconnect the pneumatic lines (ensuring no air leaks), and plug in the electrical connector.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST), and clear the 12647 fault code.
System Test
Start the tractor, allow the air compressor to build pressure, and test the tractor and trailer brake system for proper operation and air exhaustion.
