12665

Case IH 12665 – Pneumatic Trailer Brake Valve / ABS Control Module: Internal controller fault - ALU error

Issue description

The Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) inside the controller's microprocessor has failed its internal self-test or encountered a processing error. This typically indicates a fatal internal hardware or software failure within the ECU's processing chip.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Maxxum
  • Magnum

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the key power (turn off the tractor, wait for the ECU to power down completely, and turn it back on) to see if the ALU error was a temporary glitch.

  2. Check the battery voltage and ground connections to the controller. Low voltage or voltage spikes can cause microprocessor calculation errors.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness connecting to the pneumatic/ABS controller for any signs of chafing, water intrusion, or corrosion at the connector pins.

  4. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to read the fault codes. Check if the controller can communicate. If it communicates, attempt to reflash/update the controller's firmware.

  5. If the code is active and cannot be cleared, and a firmware update fails or doesn't resolve it, the controller has suffered an unrecoverable internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  3. Locate the Pneumatic Trailer Brake / ABS Control Module.

Location varies by model, often under the cab or near the rear air brake valve assembly.

  4. Disconnect the multi-pin electrical connectors from the module. Inspect for corrosion.

  5. Carefully disconnect any pneumatic air lines attached to the module (if it is an integrated electro-pneumatic valve block).

Mark the lines for proper reinstallation.

  6. Unbolt the controller from its mounting bracket and remove it.

  7. Install the new replacement controller and secure the mounting bolts.

  8. Reconnect the pneumatic lines and electrical connectors.

  9. Reconnect the battery.

  10. Connect the Case IH EST (Electronic Service Tool) laptop to the tractor's diagnostic port.

  11. Program/calibrate the new controller to the tractor's CAN bus system.

  12. Clear all fault codes and test the trailer brake/air system for proper operation.
