Case IH 12674 – ABS Controller (Anti-lock Braking System ECU): Valve plausibility monitoring - ABS activation; detected in Backup Controller

During an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) activation event, the system's backup controller detected an implausible state or mismatch in the operation of the ABS pressure modulation valves. The valves did not respond as commanded, or the feedback from the valves did not match the expected parameters during a braking event.

   Scan for related codes using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), specifically looking for companion codes like 12675 or 12687–12692

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the ABS ECU and the ABS modulator valves for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or loose pins

3. 3

   Verify the power and ground supplies to the ABS module, as low voltage or high resistance can cause valve actuation issues

   Perform an ABS system self-test or use the EST to manually actuate the ABS valves to verify mechanical response

   Clear and Retest

   Connect the EST, clear the fault code, and perform a test drive with hard braking to trigger an ABS event. Determine if the fault is an intermittent dynamic fault or a hard failure.

   Clean Connections

   Disconnect the main harness at the ABS ECU and the ABS modulator valve assembly. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and ensure the locking tabs are secure.

   Test Valve Coils

   Using a multimeter, test the resistance of the ABS modulator valve coils to ensure they are within OEM specifications and not shorted to ground.

   Replace Modulator Valve

   If the wiring and electrical tests pass but the fault persists during ABS activation, the issue is likely a sticking mechanical valve within the ABS modulator block. The ABS modulator valve assembly must be replaced.

   Replace ABS ECU

   If the valves, coils, and wiring are perfectly fine, the ABS ECU itself has suffered an internal failure in its backup controller circuit. Replace the ABS ECU and use the CNH EST to program the new module to the tractor.
