Case IH 12678 – Trailer Brake Control Module (TBCM) or Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) Module: Low voltage whilst moving - disable system functions

Issue description

The voltage supplied to the trailer braking or ABS system dropped below a critical operating threshold while the machine was in motion. Because a voltage drop can compromise the electronic control of the pneumatic or hydraulic trailer brakes, the system automatically disables its functions as a safety precaution.

Check the cause

  1. Check the battery voltage and alternator output while the tractor is running and moving to ensure the alternator is maintaining a steady voltage and not dropping out under load.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Trailer Brake Control Module and the Trailer Brake Valve for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or corrosion inside the connectors.

  3. Verify the power supply and ground (GND) at the module's power connector (often associated with Pin 1 and Pin 3 on CNH brake power connectors).

  4. Test the Trailer Brake Relay and inspect the associated fuses in the main distribution panel (MDP) for pitted contacts or intermittent voltage drops.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable before beginning electrical repairs to prevent short circuits.

  2. Clean and Secure Connections

    If corrosion is found at the TBCM or Trailer Brake Valve connectors, clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease. Ensure the connector is fully seated and locked.

  3. Replace Faulty Relays/Wiring

    If the Trailer Brake Relay fails a continuity or resistance test, replace it. Splice and heat-shrink any damaged sections of the wiring harness.

  4. Replace the Trailer Brake Valve/Module

    If the wiring, relays, and charging system are all functioning perfectly but the module continues to register an internal voltage drop, the Trailer Brake Valve or the integrated control module itself has failed and must be replaced.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the stored 12678 fault code. Test drive the tractor at operating speed to verify the code does not return and that trailer braking functions operate normally.
