12679

Case IH 12679 – Safety Controller / ABS module / DME: Voltage supply line resistance high

Issue description

There is no documented Case IH fault code '12679' that corresponds to 'Voltage supply line resistance high.' The description is officially documented as JCB fault code A2581. The code 12679 is a BMW fault code related to the engine electronics (DME).

Check the cause

  1. Battery and Charging System Check: Verify that the machine's system voltage is within the normal operating range (typically 12V or 24V depending on the system) and that the alternator is functioning correctly.

  2. Harness Inspection: Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the Safety Controller/ABS module for chafing, pinched wires, or heat damage.

  3. Connector Pin Check: Disconnect the main power connectors to the ECU. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or pushed-back pins.

  4. Voltage Drop Test: Perform a voltage drop test on the main supply line to the controller under load to isolate where the high resistance is occurring (e.g., at a relay, a fuse block, or a corroded ground).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the battery disconnect switch to ensure the system is de-energized.

  2. Clean Grounds

Locate the main chassis grounds and the specific ECU ground. Remove the grounding bolts, clean the ring terminals and the chassis contact point with a wire brush until bare metal is exposed, and reinstall securely.

  3. Repair/Replace Wiring

If the voltage drop test isolated a damaged section of the supply wire, cut out the corroded or damaged section. Splice in a new section of wire of the same or heavier gauge using weather-sealed (heat-shrink) butt connectors.

  4. Replace Relays/Fuses

If the high resistance is internal to the main power relay or fuse block, replace the affected relay or clean the fuse terminals with electrical contact cleaner.

  5. Clear Codes

Reconnect battery power, turn the ignition on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault code. Test operate the machine to ensure the code does not return.
