Issue description
This code indicates a critical pressure drop in the tractor's pneumatic (air) system, which is primarily used for the pneumatic trailer brakes and/or tractor air brakes. The system detected that the air pressure fell below the safe operating threshold of 2.5 bar (approx. 36 psi) for at least half a second while the machine was in motion. This points to a severe air leak, a failing air compressor, or a faulty pneumatic pressure sensor giving a false reading.

Check the cause
Verify Dash Gauges: Start the tractor and check the air pressure gauge on the dash. See if the system builds pressure to the normal operating range (usually 8–10 bar / 115–145 psi).
Listen for Leaks: With the system pressurized and the engine off (key on), walk around the tractor and listen for audible hissing. Pay special attention to the air compressor discharge line, the air reservoir (tank), the unloader valve, and the rear pneumatic trailer couplers (glad hands).
Inspect the Air Compressor: Check the compressor drive mechanism (belt or gear-driven) to ensure it is engaging and operating correctly.
Check the Air Tank Drain: Ensure the manual drain valve on the bottom of the air reservoir is not stuck open or leaking. Drain the tank to check for excessive oil or water, which could indicate a failing compressor or air dryer.
Test the Pressure Sensor: Locate the pneumatic pressure sensor on the air valve block or reservoir. Inspect the wiring harness and connector for corrosion, chafed wires, or loose pins that could cause a momentary voltage drop (triggering the 0.5-second fault).
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Completely drain the pneumatic system using the drain valve on the air reservoir to ensure it is safe to work on.
Repair Physical Leaks
If a ruptured hose, leaking fitting, or faulty trailer coupler was identified during diagnostics, replace the damaged pneumatic component.
Replace the Pressure Sensor
If the system holds physical pressure but the sensor reads low, disconnect the electrical connector, unscrew the old sensor from the air block/tank, and install a new sensor. Torque to OEM specifications.
Replace the Air Compressor
If the compressor cannot build pressure above 2.5 bar, remove the compressor assembly, disconnect the coolant/oil lines, and install a replacement unit.
Re-pressurize and Test
Reconnect all lines and electrical connectors. Start the engine and allow the air system to build pressure. Verify that the unloader valve cycles correctly and that pressure holds steady.
Clear Codes
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and clear fault code 12684.
Test Drive
Drive the tractor to ensure the code does not return while the vehicle is in motion.
