Case IH 12685 – EBM (Electronic Brake Module): Service Brake application too long

Issue description

Triggered when the system detects that the service brake pedal has been depressed (or the brake switch has remained active) continuously for an extended period of time while the tractor is in motion. This is a safety and component-protection monitor designed to prevent the brakes from dragging, overheating, and causing premature wear.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma
  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Optum
  • T7
  • T8
  • Terrus

Check the cause

  1. Verify with the operator if they have a habit of 'riding the brakes' (resting their foot on the brake pedals while driving).

  2. Inspect the brake pedal assembly for dirt, debris, or a lack of lubrication causing the pedal pivot to bind and preventing it from fully returning.

  3. Check the brake pedal return springs to ensure they have not stretched or broken.

  4. Test the service brake pedal switches for a sticking plunger, misalignment, or internal shorts (stuck closed).

  5. Inspect the wiring harness connected to the brake switches for chafing or shorts to ground/voltage.

Repair steps

  1. Clear Operator Error

If the issue was caused by the operator riding the brakes, simply clear the fault code using the tractor's diagnostic display or the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and instruct the operator.

  2. Lubricate the Assembly

If the pedal is mechanically sticking, clean the brake pedal pivot shaft thoroughly and apply the OEM-recommended lubricant.

  3. Replace Return Springs

If the pedal does not snap back to the top position firmly, replace the brake pedal return springs.

  4. Replace and Adjust the Brake Switch

If the brake switch is stuck closed or fails a continuity test, disconnect the wiring harness and unthread the faulty switch. Install the new OEM brake switch. Adjust the switch clearance according to the specific model's service manual so that the switch only closes when the pedal is actually depressed.

  5. Clear Codes

Cycle the key and use the EST or in-cab display to clear the 12685 fault code from the EBM. Test drive the tractor to ensure the code does not return.
