Case IH 12697 – Electronic Brake Module (EBM): ECU has not been configured
Issue description
The control module is missing its End of Line (EOL) programming, meaning the software parameters required for the module to communicate and operate with the tractor's specific options have not been set or have been lost.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Case IH Puma series
- Case IH Optum series
- Case IH Magnum series
- Case IH Maxxum series
Check the cause
Check recent service history to determine if the Electronic Brake Module (EBM) was recently replaced. A brand-new, unprogrammed module will immediately throw this code.
Check battery and voltage for a severe voltage drop, dead battery, or faulty battery isolator switch, which can cause a module to lose its volatile memory/configuration.
Check for accompanying CAN bus codes (such as 12699 or 12700). If the EBM cannot communicate with the main vehicle controller, it may fail to verify its configuration.
Verify tractor options to confirm whether the tractor is actually equipped with ABS, Hill Hold, or Traction Control, as the configuration must match the physical hardware.
Repair steps
Connect diagnostic tool
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop to the tractor's diagnostic port.
Access the EBM
Turn the ignition key to the ON position (engine off) and establish communication with the Electronic Brake Module (EBM).
Perform EOL configuration
Navigate to the programming/configuration menu and execute the End of Line (EOL) configuration for the EBM. You will need to select the correct vehicle model and enable the specific braking options installed on the tractor (e.g., ABS, radar speed sensors, Hill Hold).
Clear codes
Once the configuration is successfully written to the module, clear the fault codes.
Power cycle
Turn the key off, wait 30 seconds for the modules to power down, and turn the key back on to verify that code 12697 does not return.
Replace module
If the EBM refuses to accept the configuration, drops the configuration immediately after a power cycle, or has an internal hardware fault, the module itself must be replaced and the programming sequence repeated.
Parts you might need
(3)ABS Control Module
313859A1ABS Control Module for older Case IH MX series. Always order using the tractor's specific PIN/Serial Number.
EBM power supply fuse/relay component block
84152583EBM power supply fuse/relay component block for Optum/Puma series. Always order using the tractor's specific PIN/Serial Number.
Electronic Brake Module (EBM)
Exact part numbers vary heavily depending on the specific tractor model, year, and cab configuration. Hardware must match the pneumatic/hydraulic brake layout.
