Case IH 12699 – Electronic Brake Module (EBM): CAN message missing

Communication timeout or a complete loss of data on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus from a specific module.

   Verify that the EBM is receiving switched battery power, as a blown fuse will cause the module to drop off the CAN bus entirely.

   Measure the CAN bus resistance at the diagnostic connector with the batteries disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates an open circuit or missing terminating resistor).

   Visually inspect the wiring harness connecting the EBM to the main vehicle CAN bus for chafing, breaks, or rodent damage.

   Disconnect the EBM connector and check for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or water ingress.

   Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify that fault code 12699 is active and check for any accompanying EBM or eXBR1 codes.

   Verify active codes and check for related EBM/eXBR1 codes.

   Locate the Electronic Brake Module (EBM) on the tractor.

   Find the EBM module.

   Check the EBM power supply fuse. For example, on Optum and Puma models, check Fuse F-204 (7.5A Mini, Brown), which provides switched battery power to the EBM. Replace if blown and test for a short to ground.

   Inspect and replace the EBM power supply fuse if blown, and test for shorts.

   Disconnect the main wiring harness from the EBM. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease to prevent moisture buildup.

   Clean EBM connector contacts and apply dielectric grease.

   Perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the EBM connector and the main tractor harness. Repair any damaged sections of the wiring harness.

   Test CAN High/Low continuity and repair harness if damaged.

   If the wiring, power, and ground are all intact and the CAN bus resistance is correct, the EBM itself has likely failed internally and will need to be replaced.

   Replace the EBM if all wiring and power checks pass.

   After replacing the module or repairing the wiring, use the CNH EST to clear the fault codes and perform a test drive to ensure the braking system communicates properly and the code does not return.

   Clear fault codes with EST and test drive the tractor.
