Case IH 12703 – eXBR1 (EBM): CAN communication error — eXBR1 control mode error

The main vehicle network has lost valid communication with the electronic trailer brake system regarding its current control mode, or the module is broadcasting an invalid/mismatched control state over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus.

   Check the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the eXBR1 (EBM) module to the main tractor CAN network for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to power

   Inspect the wiring harness connectors at the eXBR1 module for corrosion, moisture ingress, backed-out pins, or poor terminal tension

   Verify that the eXBR1 module is receiving proper operating voltage and has a clean ground connection

   Check for related eXBR1 codes that might pinpoint the issue (e.g., 12702 Checksum error, 12708 Activation time too long, or 12999 Unknown EBM error)

   Resolve Wiring Faults

   If diagnostic checks reveal damaged CAN lines (CAN High / CAN Low) or power/ground wires leading to the trailer brake module, repair the wiring harness or replace the damaged connector pigtail.

   Software/Configuration Reset

   Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Verify the configuration of the eXBR1 module. If the control mode is corrupted, re-flash the EBM software or perform an End-Of-Line (EOL) configuration reset.

   Module Replacement

   If the wiring is 100% intact, the module has proper power/ground, and it will not accept a software flash or communicate its control mode properly, the eXBR1 Electronic Braking Module has failed internally and must be replaced.

   Validation

   After repair or replacement, clear the 12703 fault code using the EST and perform a functional test of the trailer brake system to ensure the control mode error does not return.
