12704

Case IH 12704 – EBM (Electronic Braking Module): CAN communication error — eXBR1 requested pressure out of range.

Issue description

The control module has received an External Brake Request 1 (eXBR1) message over the J1939 CAN bus network, but the requested pneumatic or hydraulic braking pressure value contained within that message falls outside the allowable or logical operating parameters.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Magnum
  • T6
  • T7
  • T8
  • T9
  • CVT
  • Profi

Check the cause

  1. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify if the code is active or stored, and monitor live data for the eXBR1 CAN message to see the requested pressure value

  2. Check the CAN bus wiring between the Vehicle Control Module (VCM), the EBM, and the trailer brake valve for continuity, high resistance, or shorts to ground/power

  3. Inspect the trailer brake valve and its integrated pressure sensors for failures that could send erratic data to the VCM

  4. Verify the software versions of the EBM and VCM, as software logic glitches can cause out-of-range CAN messages

Repair steps

  1. Inspect Wiring and Connectors

Locate the EBM and the trailer brake valve. Disconnect the wiring harnesses and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back pins. Clean and apply dielectric grease, or repair the harness if damaged.

  2. Test the Trailer Brake Valve

Using the EST, actuate the trailer brakes and monitor the pressure sensor feedback. If the physical pressure is normal but the sensor reads an impossible value (causing the out-of-range CAN request), the trailer brake valve assembly or its sensor must be replaced.

  3. Reflash/Update Modules

If the wiring and physical valves test fine, use the CNH EST to flash the EBM and VCM with the latest OEM software calibration.

  4. Clear and Retest

Clear the 12704 fault code. Cycle the ignition key, start the tractor, and perform a brake test (both tractor and trailer brake actuation) to ensure the code does not return.
