Case IH 12707 – EBM (Electronic Brake Module): CAN communication error - eXBR1 pressure plausibility error

Issue description

The control module is receiving implausible or erratic pressure data over the CAN bus from the eXBR1 (Electronic Trailer Brake) system. The pressure readings being reported by the trailer brake valve's sensors do not match the expected values or the commanded braking state, which points to a sensor failure, a CAN communication disruption, or a physical air leak/blockage in the pneumatic braking circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the EBM and the eXBR1 trailer brake valve. Look for corroded pins, moisture ingress, or chafed wires that could disrupt CAN communication.

  2. Inspect the pneumatic trailer brake lines, delivery ports, and air reservoirs for physical leaks. A massive air leak can cause the pressure to drop unexpectedly, triggering a plausibility error.

  3. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the live pressure sensor data from the eXBR1 valve. Compare the commanded brake pressure against the actual reported pressure to see if the sensor is stuck or reading erratically.

  4. If a trailer is attached, ensure the glad hands (air couplings) are properly seated and not leaking.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

    Before performing any physical repairs on the braking system, safely bleed all compressed air from the tractor's air reservoirs to prevent injury.

  2. Harness Repair

    If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring between the EBM and the trailer brake valve, repair the broken wires or replace the affected ABS/EBM harness section.

  3. Valve Replacement

    If the wiring is intact and there are no external air leaks, the internal pressure sensors or the logic board inside the eXBR1 trailer brake valve have failed. The valve assembly must be replaced.

  4. Disconnect Lines

    Carefully disconnect the electrical CAN connectors and the pneumatic air lines from the faulty trailer brake valve. Cap the lines to prevent debris from entering the system.

  5. Swap the Valve

    Unbolt the faulty valve from its mounting bracket and install the new OEM trailer brake valve.

  6. Reconnect and Pressurize

    Reconnect all pneumatic lines and electrical harnesses. Start the tractor and allow the air compressor to build system pressure.

  7. Leak Test & Clear Codes

    Spray soapy water on the pneumatic fittings to verify there are no air leaks. Connect the CNH EST, clear the 12707 fault code, and actuate the trailer brakes to ensure the pressure plausibility error does not return.
