12708

Case IH 12708 – EBM (Electronic Brake Module) or ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) / TECU module: CAN communication error - eXBR1 activation time too long (10 min)

Issue description

This code indicates an anomaly in the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus communication regarding the eXBR1 (External Brake Request 1) signal. The system has detected that an external brake request has been continuously active for more than 10 minutes, indicating a stuck input, a short circuit, or a module communication failure.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4B tractors
  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Magnum

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying eXBR1 CAN communication errors (such as 12702 through 12709) indicating checksum errors, control mode errors, or missing messages.

  2. Inspect the physical brake pedal switches and any external trailer brake connectors (pneumatic/hydraulic brake valves) for a stuck switch or shorted connector.

  3. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the EBM/ABS module to the main vehicle controller for chafed wires, corrosion, or moisture ingress.

  4. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the eXBR1 status live. Unplug brake switches one by one to see if an 'Active' status changes to 'Inactive'.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Stuck Signal

Disconnect the brake pedal position switches and the trailer brake request inputs. If the live data on the diagnostic tool drops the eXBR1 request, the fault lies in the switch or its immediate sub-harness.

  2. Test and Replace Switches

Use a multimeter to test the brake switches for continuity. If a switch is stuck closed, replace it.

  3. Harness Repair

If the switches test fine, trace the wiring harness back to the EBM. Repair any damaged, pinched, or corroded sections of the CAN bus wiring. Clean the EBM connector pins with electrical contact cleaner.

  4. Module Reset/Update

If the wiring and inputs are completely verified, the EBM may be experiencing a software lockup. Flash the EBM with the latest software via the dealer EST tool.

  5. Clear and Verify

Clear the 12708 fault code. Cycle the key, apply and release the brakes several times, and let the tractor run to ensure the 10-minute timer does not trigger the code again.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • Brake Pedal Switch / Sensor

    Inspect for sticking/internal shorts.

  • Trailer Brake Connector / Receptacle

Inspect for corrosion bridging the pins.

  • Electronic Brake Module (EBM) / ABS Controller

Replace only if internal failure is proven after wiring checks.

  • CAN Bus Terminating Resistor

If CAN communication is entirely down.
