Case IH 12709 – Main vehicle control unit (VCU) or cab controller: CAN communication error — eXBR1 message missing
Issue description
The tractor's main controller is failing to receive expected Controller Area Network (CAN bus) data packets from the eXBR1 node, which corresponds to the Electronic Brake Module (EBM).
Applies to these machines
3 machines- Case IH Puma series (150, 170, 185, 220, 240 CVT)
- Case IH Optum series (300 CVT)
- Case IH Magnum series
Check the cause
Check fuses supplying switched and unswitched battery power to the EBM (e.g., 7.5A Mini fuse F-204).
Inspect the EBM main wiring harness connectors for water ingress, corrosion, or pushed-back terminals.
Verify the EBM is receiving proper 12V power and has a clean ground connection using a multimeter.
Test the CAN Bus with the battery disconnected by measuring resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the EBM connector (should read approximately 60 ohms). Check for shorts to ground or power.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Access the Module
Locate the Electronic Brake Module (EBM). Depending on the model, it is typically mounted under the cab floor, near the right-hand console, or integrated near the pneumatic trailer brake valve assembly.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken CAN wire, a bad ground, or a blown fuse, repair the circuit and replace the fuse.
Replace the EBM (If Faulty)
If power, ground, and CAN continuity are all verified as good but the 12709 code persists, the EBM itself has failed internally. Unbolt the module, disconnect the harness, and install the replacement unit.
Reassemble and Calibrate
Reconnect the battery. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 12709 fault code. A new EBM may require software flashing or calibration via the EST to pair it with the tractor's specific axle and brake configuration.
