Case IH 128 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): C3-4 clutch is not calibrated

Issue description

The transmission controller has lost the calibration values for the C3-4 clutch pack, or a previous calibration procedure was interrupted or failed to complete successfully.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Magnum 235-340
  • MX210
  • MX230
  • MX255
  • MX285
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH Terragator
  • TG210
  • TG230
  • TG255
  • TG285

Check the cause

  1. Check for active electrical fault codes related to the C3-4 clutch solenoid circuit (e.g., TRANS 107 or 2356), which indicate an open or shorted circuit that will cause calibration to fail.

  2. Warm up the transmission fluid to between 60 °C and 105 °C (140 °F - 221 °F) for optimum calibration results.

  3. Park the tractor on a flat surface, engage the parking brake, and ensure the area around the machine is completely clear, as the machine can move unexpectedly during dynamic calibration.

Repair steps

  1. Park and prepare machine

Park on a flat surface, engage the parking brake, and ensure the area is clear.

  2. Check transmission temperature

Ensure the transmission oil temperature is above 60 °C (140 °F).

  3. Access CONFIG MENU

Turn the key switch to the ON position. Within ten seconds, press and hold the Enter key on the keypad to bring up the CONFIG MENU.

  4. Select TCU

Use the down arrow key to highlight TCU in the menu list and press Enter.

  5. Access ETC MENU

Scroll down to the ETC MENU screen and press Enter to access the transmission sub-menus (the TRANS VIEW screen will display).

  6. Access TRANS SETUP

Scroll down to the TRANS SETUP screen and press Enter.

  7. Select Clutch Calibration

Select the Cltch Cal (clutch calibration) screen and press Enter.

  8. Confirm temperature

The screen will display Oil Deg (current transmission fluid temperature). If the temperature is within the acceptable range, press Enter to continue.

  9. Begin calibration

The system will prompt for specific clutches (e.g., C3-4). Press Enter to begin. The transmission will automatically start shifting to find the correct calibration values.

  10. Confirm calibration

Once the clutch is successfully calibrated, the display will show the calibration numbers followed by an asterisk (*). Press Enter to confirm.

  11. Calibrate remaining clutches

Repeat the process for any other uncalibrated clutches until the display reads 'trans cal complete'.

  12. Save calibration values

Shut off the engine to save the new calibration values to the controller's memory.
