Case IH 12800 – Cab Control Module (CCM): Plausibility check: Brake Pedal - Output Invalid (brake switch low, demand pressure sensor high)

Issue description

This code triggers when the control module detects a logical contradiction in the braking system. Specifically, the brake pedal switch is sending a 'low' signal (indicating the operator is not pressing the brake pedal), but the brake demand pressure sensor is sending a 'high' signal (indicating that high hydraulic or air pressure is actively being applied to the brakes).

Check the cause

  1. Check the brake pedal linkage and return springs to ensure the pedal is not physically sticking and returns fully to its resting position.

  2. Test the brake light switch for proper continuity and state changes when the pedal is depressed and released, and check for broken wires or disconnected plugs.

  3. Monitor the brake pressure sensor output using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a multimeter to see if it reads high pressure while the pedal is completely released.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness between the brake switch, the pressure sensor, and the CCM for chafing, open circuits, or shorts to power.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

    Park the tractor on level ground, engage the park brake, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic and air pressure from the system.

  2. Address the Brake Switch (If Faulty)

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the brake switch under the dash. Unscrew the retaining nuts and remove the old switch. Install the new switch and adjust the mounting bracket so that the switch plunger is fully depressed when the brake pedal is at rest.

  3. Address the Pressure Sensor (If Faulty)

    Locate the brake demand pressure sensor (typically mounted on the brake master cylinder, trailer brake valve block, or air brake manifold). Clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from entering the system. Disconnect the wiring harness and use a wrench to remove the sensor. Install the new pressure sensor (ensure the O-ring or sealing washer is in place) and torque to OEM specifications.

  4. Bleed the System

    If a hydraulic brake pressure sensor was replaced, bleed the brake lines according to the service manual to remove any trapped air.

  5. Clear Codes

    Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST), navigate to the transmission/chassis diagnostic menu, and clear the 12800 fault code. Test drive the tractor to ensure the code does not return.
