Case IH 12803 – Trailer Brake Controller: Failure of TCV pressure sensor supply 'Short to Power'

Issue description

The voltage supply circuit for the pressure sensor on the trailer brake valve is receiving a higher voltage than expected, meaning the circuit is shorted to a power source.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the ITBV / Trailer Control Valve pressure sensor to the Trailer Brake Controller for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinched areas.

  2. Disconnect the TCV pressure sensor and use a multimeter to check the supply voltage pin on the harness side. If it shows full battery voltage on a 5V reference line, the short is in the wiring.

  3. Check plausibility and pressure by running the engine at 1000 rpm with oil at 40 to 50 degrees C, applying the foot brake, and verifying a physical gauge reading of 135 to 150 bar.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

    Park the tractor on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Wait approximately 10 seconds after applying the parking brake before stopping the engine. This allows complete discharge of the oil pressure in the trailer brake line.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the Trailer Control Valve (TCV) and its attached pressure sensor, typically mounted near the rear hydraulic remotes or the trailer brake couplers.

  3. Resolve the Short

    If the diagnostic tests proved the wiring harness is shorted to power, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the affected ITBV harness section. If the wiring is intact, the sensor has failed internally. Remove the faulty TCV pressure sensor.

  4. Install New Parts

    Thread the new pressure sensor (typically an M12 x 1.5 fitting) into the control valve and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  5. System Testing

    Start the engine and run it at 1000 rpm. Release the parking brake and apply the foot brake for a minimum of 10 seconds. Verify that the system reaches and holds 135 to 150 bar without pressure peaks or leaks.

  6. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic tool to clear fault code 12803 from the ITBV ECU.
