Case IH 12810 – Trailer Brake Controller (iTBV) or Transmission/Chassis Control Module (MTA CCM): Trailer Brake Controller Service Brake Sensor Fault

Detection of invalid duty-cycle / pulse-width at PWM signal 1 (Brake pedal demand sensor) or sensor disconnected.

   Visually inspect the brake pedal demand sensor (located at the brake pedal assembly in the cab) to ensure it is securely mounted and that the pedal mechanism is not physically obstructed or damaged.

   Inspect the sensor's electrical connector for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture. Check the wiring harness between the sensor and the Trailer Brake Controller for chafing, breaks, or a disconnected plug.

   Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (usually 5V) and has a solid ground.

   Using an oscilloscope or a high-end multimeter with a duty-cycle function, back-probe the signal wire. Slowly depress the brake pedal and observe the PWM signal to ensure the duty cycle smoothly transitions without dropping out or spiking out of range.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Sensor

   Remove the lower dash or steering column trim panels as necessary to gain clear access to the brake pedal assembly.

   Wiring Repair

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector, repair the harness using OEM-approved weather-sealed splices or replace the pigtail connector.

   Sensor Replacement

   If the wiring is intact but the sensor failed the PWM signal test, disconnect the electrical plug from the brake pedal demand sensor. Remove the mounting fasteners holding the sensor to the pedal bracket and remove the faulty sensor.

   Install New Sensor

   Mount the new sensor in the exact orientation as the old one. Torque the fasteners to OEM spec (do not overtighten, as these are often plastic housings). Reconnect the electrical plug.

   Reassembly & Calibration

   Reconnect the battery. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the tractor's diagnostic port. Clear the inactive 12810 fault code. Perform a Brake Pedal Calibration routine via the EST or the tractor's instrument cluster (ICP) to teach the module the new sensor's minimum and maximum travel values.
