Case IH 12830 – MTA CCM (Chassis Control Module / Cab Control Module): Failure detection 'Short to Ground' at Outlet Valve (OV)

Issue description

The control module monitoring the hydraulic/transmission system has detected an electrical short to ground in the circuit for the Outlet Valve. This means the voltage intended for the valve's solenoid coil is finding a premature path to the chassis (ground) due to damaged wiring, a failed connector, or an internally shorted solenoid coil, preventing the valve from actuating properly.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Farmall 40
  • Farmall 45
  • Farmall 50
  • Farmall 115U Efficient Power
  • MX210
  • MX230
  • MX255
  • MX285

Check the cause

  1. Perform a visual wiring inspection of the harness from the CCM to the Outlet Valve (OV) for pinched wires, rubbed insulation, or melted loom.

  2. Disconnect the harness at the Outlet Valve and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, water ingress, or bent terminals.

  3. Perform a coil resistance test using a digital multimeter across the pins of the Outlet Valve solenoid coil (near 0 ohms indicates an internal short).

  4. Test the signal wire for continuity to the chassis ground with the valve and CCM disconnected to check for a shorted wiring harness.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Relieve Pressure

If the valve requires complete removal (not just the coil), relieve hydraulic system pressure by cycling the hydraulic levers/pedals.

  3. Locate the Valve

Locate the Outlet Valve (OV) on the transmission control valve block or the trailer brake control manifold (depending on the specific tractor configuration).

  4. Address Wiring (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic tests revealed a wiring short, cut out the chafed section of the wire, solder in a new section of equivalent gauge, and seal it with marine-grade heat shrink.

  5. Replace the Solenoid/Valve (If Applicable)

Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut or snap ring holding the solenoid coil to the valve cartridge. Slide the shorted coil off the valve stem. (If the mechanical valve cartridge is also seized, unthread the cartridge from the block and install a new one). Slide the new OEM solenoid coil onto the stem and secure it with the retaining nut.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring the weather seal is intact.

  7. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic scan tool (or the tractor's onboard diagnostic display) to clear the inactive 12830 fault code.

  8. Test

Start the tractor and operate the transmission/hydraulics to verify the code does not return and the system functions normally.
