Case IH 12837 – MTA CCM: Failure detection 'Short to Power' at low side brake switch (LSS)

Issue description

The control module is detecting an unexpectedly high voltage (a short to a 12V power source) on the low side (ground/return side) of the brake switch circuit. When this occurs, the controller cannot accurately determine the position of the brake pedal, which can affect transmission disengagement, brake lights, and trailer braking systems.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the brake switch (located at the brake pedal assembly) and its electrical connector for physical damage, corrosion, or water ingress.

  2. Disconnect the brake switch and probe the low-side signal wire on the harness side with the key ON. A 12V reading indicates a chafed wiring harness shorting to a power wire.

  3. Test the brake switch for internal shorts by actuating it manually to ensure internal contacts open and close properly and are not permanently shorted to the power pin.

  4. Inspect the pins at the Cab Control Module (CCM) for bent pins or corrosion that could bridge a power circuit to the brake switch input.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Switch

    Locate the brake switch assembly under the dash/cab console near the brake pedals.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the harness, trace the wire back to the CCM. Splice and heat-shrink the damaged section of the wire, ensuring it is routed away from sharp metal edges.

  4. Replace the Switch

    If faulty, unplug the electrical connector from the brake switch. Loosen the retaining nuts or clips holding the switch to the pedal bracket. Remove the old switch and install the new OEM switch. Adjust the switch clearance according to the service manual so that the pedal actuates it at the correct travel distance.

  5. Reassembly and Testing

    Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.

  6. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic scan tool (like the CNH EST tool) to clear the 12837 fault code from the CCM.

  7. Verify Operation

    Press the brake pedals to ensure the brake lights illuminate and the fault code does not return.
