Case IH 12838 – CCM (Cab Control Module / Chassis Control Module) or APH (Armrest Performance Hub): Failure detection 'Short to Ground' at low side brake switch (LSS)

Issue description

The controller has detected that the voltage on the low side brake switch circuit has dropped to zero (or near zero), indicating that the signal wire is shorted directly to the chassis ground, or the switch itself has failed internally and is grounding out the circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness routing from the brake pedal switches to the Cab Control Module for pinched wires, chafing against the cab floor/firewall, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the low side brake switch connector and use a digital multimeter to measure resistance between the signal wire on the harness side and a known good chassis ground. Continuity indicates a harness short; no continuity indicates an internal switch short.

  3. Test the brake switch pins with a multimeter while actuating the pedal to see if it is internally shorted to its own housing or stuck closed.

  4. Inspect the switch and module connectors for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the circuit to ground.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Switch

    Locate the brake switches, which are typically mounted at the top of the brake pedal assembly under the dash console. You may need to remove the lower steering column cowl or dash trim panels to gain access.

  3. Harness Repair (If applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a shorted wire, trace the harness back to the CCM. Cut out the damaged section of the wire and solder/heat-shrink a new section of wire, or replace the affected harness sub-assembly.

  4. Switch Replacement (If applicable)

    Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty brake switch. Loosen the retaining/lock nuts holding the switch in the mounting bracket. Thread the old switch out. Thread the new switch into the bracket. Adjust the depth so that the switch plunger is correctly depressed when the brake pedal is at rest, and released when the pedal is pressed (refer to the specific model's service manual for exact clearance gaps). Tighten the lock nuts and reconnect the electrical harness.

  5. Reassembly and Clearing Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use the tractor's diagnostic display or a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 12838 fault code. Test the brake pedals to ensure the brake lights operate correctly and the code does not return.
