12861

Case IH 12861 – Vehicle Controller: Trailer Brake Controller Communication Fault with Vehicle Controller

Issue description

A CAN communication failure indicating the main Vehicle Controller has lost communication with the Trailer Brake Controller.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Farmall 40
  • Farmall 45
  • Farmall 50

Check the cause

  1. Verify system voltage for overvoltage or undervoltage conditions (check for related codes 12872 or 12873)

  2. Verify that the tractor is correctly configured for a trailer brake (rule out code 12882)

  3. Test CAN bus network physical layer and termination (ensure 120 Ω resistor is present)

  4. Scan for codes 12885 or 12886 to check for a Trailer Brake Controller internal fault

Repair steps

  1. Inspect Wiring

Locate the wiring harness connecting the Vehicle Controller to the Trailer Brake Controller. Inspect for physical damage, chafing, or disconnected plugs.

  2. Test CAN Lines

Using a multimeter, verify the integrity of the CAN High and CAN Low circuits. Ensure the network is properly time-phased and terminated with 120 Ω resistors.

  3. Check Power and Ground

Verify that the Trailer Brake Controller is receiving proper operating voltage (ruling out the undervoltage/overvoltage conditions mentioned in the manual).

  4. Module Replacement/Reprogramming

If the wiring, termination resistors, and power supplies are intact, replace the Trailer Brake Controller module and ensure the correct Trailer Brake Configuration is programmed to avoid triggering code 12882.
