Case IH 12862 – Vehicle Controller (VCM): Trailer Brake Controller Communication Fault with Vehicle Controller

The Vehicle Controller has lost CAN (Controller Area Network) communication with the Trailer Brake Controller. The system is unable to send or receive the necessary data packets to coordinate braking between the tractor and the trailer.

   Check the CAN bus lines between the Vehicle Controller and the Trailer Brake Controller for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to power

   Verify that the Trailer Brake Controller is receiving proper voltage

   Ensure the trailer brake configuration hasn't been corrupted or incorrectly set in the ECU

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the trailer brake module for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or backed-out pins

   Consult the VCM Troubleshooting Guide

   Locate the Trailer Brake Controller on your specific tractor model (often located near the rear axle or integrated into the rear hydraulic valve stack).

   Test the CAN Line

   Disconnect the harness at the Trailer Brake Controller and the Vehicle Controller. Use a multimeter to check the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins (it should typically read around 60 ohms if the terminating resistors are intact).

   Verify Power and Ground

   With the key ON, verify that the Trailer Brake Controller is receiving stable battery voltage and has a clean ground.

   Repair Wiring

   If any CAN lines are open or shorted, repair or replace the affected section of the wiring harness.

   Replace/Recalibrate

   If the wiring, power, and ground are all within specification but the communication fault persists, the Trailer Brake Controller itself has likely failed internally and must be replaced. After replacement, a dealer calibration/software flash may be required to pair the new module with the Vehicle Controller.
