Case IH 12898 – Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) / Central Controller: Trailer Brake Controller Communication Fault

The tractor has lost CAN communication with the trailer brake module. The module shuts down its own communication chip and goes 'Bus Off' due to too many transmit or receive errors, usually caused by physical wiring issues like shorts or missing termination.

   Disconnect the tractor's battery and measure the resistance between the CAN High and CAN Low pins on the diagnostic port or at the module connector (should read exactly 60 ohms).

   Check for a missing, failed, or disconnected terminating resistor if the reading is 120 ohms, or a short circuit between the CAN lines if the reading is 0 ohms.

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON (engine off), and measure the voltage on the CAN lines (both CAN High and CAN Low should rest at approximately 2.5V). A reading of 0V or 12V indicates a short to ground or power.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Trailer Brake Controller for chafing, corrosion, or moisture intrusion at the connector.

   Power down the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

   Locate the Trailer Brake Controller.

   Usually mounted near the rear axle or pneumatic valve block.

   Disconnect the main harness connector from the controller and inspect the pins.

   Inspect for pushed-out terminals, green corrosion, or water ingress. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.

   Perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires.

   Test from the controller connector back to the central VCU to rule out an open circuit.

   Splice and repair the damaged section of the CAN twisted-pair wiring if a fault is found.

   Ensure the wire twists are maintained as close to the repair as possible to prevent electromagnetic interference.

   Replace the Trailer Brake Controller if wiring and termination resistors test perfectly.

   If the wiring and termination resistors (60 ohms total) test perfectly, the controller has likely suffered an internal hardware failure and is permanently stuck in a 'Bus Off' state.

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and clear the fault code.

   Use a diagnostic scan tool (like the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the 12898 fault code and verify that communication is restored.
