Case IH 129 – Armrest Controller (ARM): Auxiliary 5th remote valve FLOW potentiometer has failed
Issue description
The controller has detected an invalid signal from the 5th remote valve flow potentiometer (typically an out-of-range voltage, open circuit, or short circuit), meaning the tractor can no longer determine the requested flow rate for that specific hydraulic circuit.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MX Magnum
- STX Steiger
- Case IH Magnum Series
- MX Magnum (MX215, MX245, MX275, MX305, MX285)
- Magnum Series 4 (235-340)
- Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac Series (380, 430, 435, 535)
Check the cause
Inspect the 5th remote flow control knob on the armrest for physical breakage, looseness, or lack of normal rotational resistance.
Open the armrest console cover, disconnect the 5th remote flow potentiometer harness, and check for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or chafed wires shorting against the frame.
Temporarily swap the electrical connector of the 5th remote potentiometer with the 4th remote potentiometer. If the fault code changes to the 4th remote, the potentiometer is dead; if Code 129 remains, the issue is in the wiring or controller board.
Test the potentiometer with a multimeter to verify it provides a smooth sweep from ~0 to 1000 Ohms as the dial is turned. Dead spots or an open reading confirm failure.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent shorting any sensitive Armrest Controller circuits.
Access the Armrest Internals
Remove the retaining screws holding the upper housing/cover of the armrest console (where the flow control dials are located).
Remove the Faulty Sensor
Disconnect the wiring harness from the 5th remote flow potentiometer. Remove the knob from the top side, then remove the retaining nut/plate holding the potentiometer to the console housing.
Install the New Part
Insert the new potentiometer into the mounting plate, secure the retaining nut, and reattach the flow control knob.
Reconnect
Plug the wiring harness back into the new potentiometer. Reassemble the armrest housing and reconnect the tractor's battery.
Perform Armrest (ARM) Calibration
Hold the PROG key on the A-post display while turning the ignition key to the ON position (do not start the engine). Navigate through the menu to find the ARM (Armrest) calibration section. Follow the on-screen prompts to cycle the remote levers and dials through their full range of motion (fully back, fully forward, and neutral/center). Turn off the ignition key and wait exactly 30 seconds before starting the tractor.
