Case IH 129 – Transmission Controller (TRANS / TCU): C5-6 clutch is not calibrated

Issue description

The Transmission Electronic Control Module (TECM) does not have the correct dynamic calibration values (fill times and engagement pressures) saved for the C5-6 clutch pack, which prevents smooth shifting and proper torque transmission.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • Magnum 180-340
  • Steiger Quadtrac
  • Steiger wheeled models
  • TG Series
  • Maxxum Series
  • Puma Series
  • Optum Series

Check the cause

  1. Check for active electrical faults for the C5-6 clutch solenoid (e.g., fault code 107). Calibration will fail if electrical faults are present.

  2. Verify transmission fluid temperature is between 60°C and 105°C (140°F - 221°F).

  3. Ensure the tractor is parked on a flat, level surface in an open area with the parking brake engaged, as the machine may move during calibration.

Repair steps

  1. Warm transmission fluid

Start the engine and warm the transmission hydraulic fluid to at least 60°C (140°F).

  2. Prepare tractor for calibration

Park on a flat surface, engage the parking brake, and leave the engine running at the specified idle RPM (usually around 1200 RPM, check your specific operator's manual).

  3. Access CONFIG MENU

Turn the key switch to the ON position. Within 10 seconds, press and hold the Enter key on the keypad to access the CONFIG MENU.

  4. Select TCU

Use the down arrow key to highlight TCU (Transmission Control Unit) and press Enter.

  5. Access ETC MENU

Navigate down to the ETC MENU and press Enter to access the transmission sub-menus (the TRANS VIEW screen will display).

  6. Access TRANS SETUP

Scroll down to the TRANS SETUP screen and press Enter.

  7. Select Clutch Calibration

Select Cltch Cal (Clutch Calibration) and press Enter.

  8. Verify oil temperature

The screen will display the current transmission oil temperature (Oil Deg). If it is within the 60-105°C range, press Enter to proceed.

  9. Begin calibration

The system will prompt you to begin the calibration. The controller will automatically shift through the clutches (or you can select the specific C5-6 clutch depending on the software version). The TECM will pulse the C5-6 solenoid to measure the speed at which the clutch engages.

  10. Save calibration values

Once the controller finds the correct calibration values, it will display the calibration numbers followed by an asterisk (*). Press Enter to save the values.

  11. Complete calibration

Once all required clutches are calibrated, the screen will display 'Trans Cal Complete'. Exit the menu and cycle the key switch to save the settings.

Parts you might need

    Replaces older part numbers: 87739558, 87729558R, 87719109, 87690667, 87624294, 87577678, 85195038, 5196873, 5195038, 1931612. Used across Case IH Magnum, Maxxum, Puma, and Optum series.

  • C5-6 Clutch Pack / Seal Kit

Generic part name; specific part numbers require the exact transmission serial number. If the solenoid is replaced and calibration still fails, the transmission will need to be split to rebuild the C5-6 clutch pack.
