Case IH 12931 – MTA CCM & APH: Checksum Error for parameter 12

Issue description

A checksum error indicates that the control module has detected a data corruption issue within its internal memory (EEPROM/Flash). If the calculated value for 'parameter 12' does not match the expected stored value, the module logs this fault to prevent erratic operation.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH Farmall 40
  • Case IH Farmall 45
  • Case IH Farmall 50
  • Case IH Farmall 115U Efficient Power

Check the cause

  1. Verify battery health, alternator output, and inspect the main ground straps connected to the CCM for voltage spikes, low battery voltage, or poor grounds

  2. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify if the code is active or stored

  3. Determine if the tractor recently underwent a software update, calibration, or jump-start, as interrupted programming can corrupt parameter data

Repair steps

  1. Clear and Retest

Using the CNH EST, attempt to clear the fault code. Cycle the key off for 30 seconds, then turn it back on to see if the code returns.

  2. Module Re-configuration / Reflash

If the code is hard-set (active) and cannot be cleared, the corrupted parameter must be overwritten. Use the EST to re-flash the MTA CCM with the latest software or perform a module reconfiguration to restore the factory parameter data.

  3. Recalibration

If the re-flash is successful, perform the quick-fill transmission and hydraulic calibrations.

  4. Module Replacement

If the EST cannot communicate with the module, the re-flash fails, or the 12931 code immediately returns after programming, the CCM has suffered an internal hardware/memory failure and must be replaced.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • MTA Central Control Module (CCM) / Cab Control Module

Varies by specific Farmall/Mid-Range model (Requires serial number lookup). If a new CCM is installed, it will arrive blank or with base software and MUST be programmed and calibrated using the CNH EST before the tractor will operate correctly.
