Case IH 12944 – Trailer Brake Controller (iTBV - Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve): Plausibility check: Pressure Controller - Actual Pressure too low (on control line)
Issue description
The system has detected that the actual hydraulic or pneumatic pressure in the trailer brake control line is lower than the demanded/expected pressure while the vehicle is driving above a specific speed threshold. Note: This code was officially removed and superseded by 12806.

- Magnum
Check the cause
Verify if the tractor's software is up to date (look for active code 12806 instead of 12944, as 12944 was superseded).
Inspect the trailer brake control line, hoses, and rear tractor couplings for physical leaks, damage, or blockages.
Check the Trailer Control Valve (TCV) pressure sensor wiring harness for shorts to power or ground.
Connect a manual pressure gauge to the control line test port and compare the physical gauge reading to the live data reading on the diagnostic tool.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Hook up the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to read the fault codes and monitor the live data for the Trailer Brake Controller pressure sensor.
Inspect Couplings
Safely disconnect any attached trailer brake lines. Inspect the tractor-side couplings for debris, damaged seals, or sticking valves that could restrict flow and cause a pressure drop.
Perform Pressure Test
Actuate the brakes while monitoring the manual pressure gauge on the control line.
Address Mechanical Pressure Loss
If the physical pressure is genuinely low, inspect the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (iTBV) for internal leaks, spool valve sticking, or mechanical failure. Replace the iTBV if it cannot maintain commanded pressure.
Address Sensor Failure
If the physical pressure is normal but the ECU reads it as low, the pressure sensor on the control line has failed and must be replaced.
Clear and Test
Clear the fault codes using the CNH EST. Perform a test drive above the speed threshold and apply the brakes to ensure the plausibility check passes and the code does not return.
