Case IH 12947 – Vehicle Controller: Trailer Brake Controller Communication Fault with Vehicle Controller

Issue description

The Vehicle Controller is expecting to receive a specific data packet (PB_XPD_27) from the Trailer Brake Controller at regular intervals, but the message is missing, timing out, or failing to repeat on the CAN network.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Farmall

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying power/voltage codes (e.g., 12872, 12873, 12883, 12884) which can cause the controller to drop offline.

  2. Inspect CAN 1 HI and CAN 1 LO wiring between the Trailer Brake Controller and Vehicle Controller for continuity, opens, or shorts to ground.

  3. Measure terminating resistance across the CAN bus network with the battery disconnected (should be approximately 60 ohms).

  4. Inspect harness connectors at the Trailer Brake Controller for moisture ingress, corrosion, or pushed pins.

  5. Verify the vehicle has not lost its configuration settings (check for code 12882: Incorrect Trailer Brake Configuration).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes during module handling.

  2. Locate the Modules

Locate the Vehicle Controller (usually in the cab/armrest) and the Trailer Brake Controller/Valve (typically mounted near the rear axle/hydraulic stack).

  3. Clean and Reseat

Disconnect the harness from the Trailer Brake Controller. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and firmly reseat the connector.

  4. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a break or short in the CAN HI / CAN LO lines, splice and repair the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  5. Replace the Module

If the wiring is intact, power and ground to the module are verified, and the controller remains unresponsive on the CAN bus (internal failure), replace the Trailer Brake Controller/Valve.

  6. Clear Codes and Calibrate

Reconnect the battery. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the on-board HH diagnostic menus to clear the fault codes. If a new module was installed, perform the trailer brake configuration/calibration procedure.
