Case IH 12972 – Trailer Brake Controller / CCM: System in redundant mode due to End-Of-Line test procedure

Issue description

This code indicates that the control module is currently stuck in a factory or dealer diagnostic test mode (the "End-Of-Line" or EOL test). Because the test procedure was initiated but not properly completed or exited, the system has defaulted to a "redundant" (failsafe) operating mode to prevent unsafe operation of the pneumatic/hydraulic systems.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH / CNH Stage V Mid-Range (MR) tractors
  • Farmall
  • Maxxum
  • Puma Stage V models

Check the cause

  1. Determine if the Trailer Brake Controller or CCM was recently replaced, updated, or reprogrammed, as EOL test faults usually occur after a module flash or replacement where final calibration steps were skipped.

  2. Check for accompanying EEPROM faults (codes 12973 or 12974). If active, the module's memory is corrupted.

  3. Verify there are no active pneumatic redundancy plausibility faults (code 12975) or brake demand sensor offset failures (code 12976), which could prevent the EOL test from completing.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the tractor's diagnostic port.

  2. Access the Module

Navigate to the CCM / Trailer Brake Controller module.

  3. Perform EOL Calibration

Locate the "End-Of-Line" (EOL) test or configuration procedure in the EST service routines. Initiate and successfully complete the EOL calibration to properly configure the module and take it out of redundant mode.

  4. Clear Codes

Once the EOL procedure is successfully completed, clear the fault codes.

  5. Power Cycle

Turn the key off, wait for the modules to power down completely, and turn the key back on. Verify that fault code 12972 does not return.

  6. Module Replacement (If Necessary)

If the EOL test repeatedly fails to complete, or if the module is simultaneously logging EEPROM read/write failures (12973/12974), the Trailer Brake Controller has suffered an internal memory failure and must be replaced and reprogrammed.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Trailer Brake Controller / Chassis Control Module (CCM)

If replacing the module, the new unit will be blank or in factory mode and will require the CNH EST to perform the End-Of-Line configuration before it will function.
