12975

Case IH 12975 – MTA CCM & APH: Pneumatic redundancy plausibility check failed.

Issue description

This code indicates an anomaly in the pneumatic trailer braking system. Specifically, the system's safety redundancy checks have failed because the actual pneumatic pressure, sensor readings, or valve states do not match the expected (plausible) values commanded by the controller.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Magnum
  • CVX

Check the cause

  1. Access On-Board Diagnostics using the H-menu (requires a special diagnostic lead) to extract all stored fault codes and verify the configuration of the vehicle subsystems.

  2. Check for related codes that point to the root cause, such as 12976 (Brake demand sensor offset failure) or 12977 (Pressure Controller - Actual Pressure too low on control line).

  3. Inspect the pneumatic trailer brake control lines, fittings, and hoses for air leaks, blockages, or physical damage.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the CCM/APH to the pneumatic trailer brake valve and brake demand sensors. Look for shorts to ground, shorts to power, or disconnected pins.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Safely bleed all air pressure from the tractor's pneumatic braking system before servicing.

  2. Inspect the Trailer Brake Valve

Locate the pneumatic trailer brake hand control valve/modulator valve. Check for audible air leaks around the valve body and fittings.

  3. Repair or Replace the Valve

If the valve is leaking from the seals, rebuild it using an OEM seal kit. If the valve has an internal mechanical or electrical failure causing the plausibility check to fail, remove the mounting bolts and pneumatic lines, and replace the entire trailer brake valve assembly.

  4. Reassemble and Pressurize

Reconnect all pneumatic lines and electrical connectors. Start the tractor and allow the air compressor to build system pressure.

  5. Clear Codes and Calibrate

Connect the diagnostic tool, clear the active 12975 fault code, and perform any necessary brake demand sensor calibrations.

  6. Functional Test

Actuate the trailer brakes to ensure the redundancy plausibility check passes and the fault code does not return.
