Case IH 12976 – CCM and Trailer Brake Controller: Brake Demand Sensor Offset Failure
Issue description
The control module has detected an implausible offset value from the brake demand sensor. The sensor's baseline zero reading is outside of the acceptable calibrated range when the pedal is at rest, causing a plausibility check failure.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- Stage V MR (Mid-Range) tractors
- Farmall 40-45-50 Cab/CVT
- Farmall 115U
- Maxxum
- Puma
- Vestrum
Check the cause
Check for related brake sensor supply fault codes (e.g., 12818 or 12819) which indicate a wiring issue rather than a failed sensor.
Inspect the brake pedal assembly and linkage for debris, mud, or mechanical binding preventing the brake pedal from returning fully to its resting position.
Use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the brake demand sensor voltage/percentage. Check if the value returns to a steady 0% (or specified baseline voltage) when the pedal is released.
Disconnect the brake demand sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins. Verify a stable 5V reference supply and good ground to the sensor.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the negative battery terminal before servicing electronic control components.
Access the sensor
Locate the brake demand sensor, which is typically mounted directly on the brake pedal assembly linkage inside the cab or at the master cylinder linkage.
Remove the sensor
Unplug the electrical connector. Remove the mounting screws/bolts securing the sensor to the pedal bracket.
Install the new sensor
Mount the replacement sensor in the exact orientation as the old one. Tighten the fasteners to OEM torque specs and reconnect the wiring harness.
Calibrate the sensor
Reconnect the battery, connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool, and perform the transmission/brake controller End-Of-Line (EOL) calibration procedure to teach the module the new sensor's zero-point.
Clear codes and test
Clear the 12976 fault code and test drive the tractor, verifying proper service brake and trailer brake operation.
Parts you might need
(1)Brake Demand Sensor / Service Brake Potentiometer
Ensure the sensor is compatible with Stage V MR (Mid-Range) Cab Control Module systems. Verify exact part number via Case IH parts catalog using the tractor's specific PIN/Serial Number.
