Case IH 12982 – CCM (Chassis Control Module / Cab Control Module): Checksum Error for parameter 29
Issue description
A checksum error indicates an internal memory or software fault within the control module. The module continuously verifies its stored parameter data (parameter 29) against an expected mathematical value (the checksum). When these values do not match, it indicates that the data in the EEPROM or flash memory has been corrupted, lost, or failed to write properly.
Applies to these machines
12 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- Farmall Series
- Farmall 115U
- Farmall 40-45-50
- Puma Series

- Combines
- AFX8010
- 8010
- 7010
Check the cause
Check for Voltage Drops: Verify battery health, alternator output, and clean ground connections to the CCM, as low voltage during engine cranking can cause false checksum errors.
Check for Accompanying Codes: Look for other internal memory faults like 12973, 12974, or 12978 through 12992, which indicate catastrophic memory failure.
Attempt a Reset: Clear the fault code using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and cycle the key to see if the fault is an active, hard fault or a historic glitch.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Hook up the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) to the machine's diagnostic port.
Clear and Retest
Clear the fault code stack. Turn the key off, wait for the CCM to power down completely, and turn the key back on.
Recalibrate / Reprogram
If the code returns, attempt to re-flash the CCM with the latest software update or perform an End-Of-Line (EOL) calibration procedure. This forces the module to rewrite the parameters to its memory, which can sometimes resolve a corrupted parameter 29.
Replace the Module
If the module refuses the software flash, or if the code 12982 returns immediately after reprogramming, the internal EEPROM is physically damaged. The CCM must be replaced.
Configure New Module
Install the new CCM and use the CNH EST to program the module with the specific machine's configuration and software payload.
