Case IH 12999 – Trailer Brake Control module (iTBV): iTBV fault code not recognized (Reference UCM for fault code)

The Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (iTBV) / Trailer Brake Control module has encountered an error state that it cannot interpret or broadcast a specific code for. Instead of providing a direct diagnosis, it acts as a redirect code, instructing the technician to check the Universal Control Module (UCM) for the actual underlying fault code.

   Do not immediately replace the iTBV, as code 12999 is a redirect code

   Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port

   Access the Universal Control Module (UCM) fault stack

   Read the active and stored fault codes in the UCM to identify the actual component, sensor, or circuit failure

   Inspect the wiring harnesses and CAN bus connections between the iTBV and the UCM for damage or poor connections

   Connect diagnostic software

   Connect the CNH EST diagnostic software and establish communication with the vehicle.

   Retrieve fault code

   Navigate to the UCM and retrieve the specific fault code that triggered the 12999 error in the iTBV.

   Diagnose and repair

   Diagnose and perform the repair procedure for the specific UCM fault code (e.g., repairing a wiring short, replacing a faulty sensor, or updating software).

   Replace iTBV

   If the UCM indicates a failure of the iTBV itself, replace the iTBV electronic control unit or valve assembly.

   Clear fault codes

   After completing the repair, use the CNH EST to clear the fault codes from both the UCM and the iTBV fault stacks.
