Case IH 13008 – UCM / CCU / XCM: Reference voltage 8V5REF – voltage too high

Issue description

The control module is detecting that the 8.5-volt reference circuit is measuring a voltage higher than its normal operating threshold. This is typically caused by a short to a higher voltage source (such as a 12V battery line) in the wiring harness, an internally shorted sensor back-feeding voltage, or an internal failure within the control module's power supply circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the main controller connectors (e.g., Connector CN1A) and main wiring harness for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to a 12V power wire

  2. Check the connector pins at the UCM/CCU to ensure they are securely plugged in, undamaged, and free of corrosion or pushed-back pins

  3. Perform a sensor isolation drop test by disconnecting sensors on the 8.5V circuit one at a time; if voltage drops to normal (8.5V), the disconnected sensor is internally shorted

  4. With sensors disconnected, test the 8V5REF pin on the harness side with a multimeter to check for a 12V short to power in the wiring harness

  5. If the harness is isolated, test the controller output at the pin to determine if the controller has suffered an internal power supply failure

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Repair Wiring / Replace Sensor

    If a short to power was found in the harness, splice and repair the damaged section of the wire using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness section. If a sensor was found to be back-feeding voltage, replace the faulty sensor.

  3. Replace the Control Module

    If the UCM/CCU failed the internal voltage test, unbolt the module, disconnect the harness blocks, and install the replacement module.

  4. Clear Codes and Recalibrate

    Reconnect the battery. Use the machine's display or instrument cluster (often via the 'H8' or 'HC' menu on CNH equipment) to clear the stored EEPROM error codes.

  5. Test Operation

    Cycle the key and verify that code 13008 does not return. If the controller was replaced, re-enter the machine's configuration settings and perform necessary calibration routines (such as steering angle or transmission calibrations).
