Case IH 13010 – TRANS: Transmission Oil Temp Sensor Failed

Issue description

This fault code indicates that the Tractor Data Bus has signaled a failure of the transmission oil temperature sensor signal within the instrument controller. The transmission oil temperature sensor is hardwired directly to the instrument controller. This can be caused by a failed sensor, a wiring harness problem such as a short or open circuit, or an internal hardware or software failure within the instrument controller.

Check the cause

  1. Check for secondary INST codes (INST 13021 or INST 13022) on the display

  2. Disconnect the transmission oil temperature sensor and check its resistance with a multimeter to see if it is out of specification or internally shorted

  3. Trace the wiring harness from the sensor back to the instrumentation controller, looking for rubbed wires, pin corrosion, open circuits, or shorts to ground

  4. Evaluate the instrument controller for a software execution error if the sensor and wiring test perfectly

Repair steps

  1. Prepare tractor

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.

  2. Locate sensor

    Locate the transmission oil temperature sensor on the transmission housing.

  3. Inspect connector

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor. Inspect the pins for corrosion or damage.

  4. Test wiring continuity

    Using a multimeter, test the continuity of the wiring harness from the sensor connector to the instrument controller pins. Repair any damaged wires or replace the harness section if a short/open circuit is found.

  5. Remove old sensor

    If the wiring is intact, unthread the old transmission oil temperature sensor from the housing (have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may leak).

  6. Install new sensor

    Install the new OEM transmission oil temperature sensor and tighten to factory specifications.

  7. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Clear fault codes

    Turn the key on and use your diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard display to clear the TRANS 13010 (and any INST 13021/13022) fault codes.

  9. Verify repair

    Start the tractor and bring the transmission up to operating temperature to verify the code does not return and the temperature reads accurately on the dash.

  10. Evaluate controller

    If the code persists after sensor replacement and wiring verification, the instrument controller will need to be reflashed by a dealer or replaced.
