13012 - UCM

Case IH 13012 - UCM – UCM: Supply voltage 12VD - voltage too low

Issue description

This code triggers when the 12-volt power supply on the specific '12VD' circuit drops below the minimum acceptable operating threshold. This indicates a power starvation issue to the module, which can cause erratic behavior, communication loss on the CAN-bus, or complete subsystem failure.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Puma
  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Steiger
  • Axial-Flow Combines
  • Farmlift Telehandlers (632, 635, 735, 742, 935)
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SR, SV, TR, TV series)
  • Wheel Loaders (21F - 321F)

Check the cause

  1. Perform a load test on the batteries and verify the alternator is outputting 13.5V–14.2V during operation (low system voltage will trigger this code).

  2. Locate the cab/main fuse box and inspect the specific fuses and power relays supplying the UCM for micro-cracks or failure under load.

  3. Trace the wiring harness leading to the UCM and inspect the main multi-pin connectors for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture ingress.

  4. Perform a voltage drop test by back-probing the '12VD' power supply pin at the UCM connector while the system is under load. If voltage is significantly lower than battery voltage, there is high resistance in the harness. If voltage is good, the UCM has an internal fault.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the master disconnect switch or remove the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the UCM

Locate the UCM (location varies by machine, typically found in the right-hand console, armrest, or behind the cab electrical panel).

  3. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue on the 12VD circuit, repair the chafed wire or replace the corroded connector terminal.

  4. Replace the UCM

If internally failed, unplug the multi-pin CAN-bus and power connectors from the UCM, unbolt the module from its mounting bracket, install the replacement UCM, and reconnect the wiring harnesses ensuring weather seals seat properly.

  5. Flash and Calibrate

Reconnect the battery. Flash/program the new or remanufactured UCM with the specific machine's firmware using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  6. Clear Codes

Use the EST or the tractor's 'H Menu' (diagnostic menu) to clear the stored 13012 fault code and perform any necessary subsystem calibrations (e.g., transmission or clutch calibrations).
