13044

Case IH 13044 – INST: When fuel shut off relay is latched, short is detected (mechanical engine tractors only)

Issue description

When the instrument cluster attempts to latch the fuel shut-off relay, it senses an excessive current draw of greater than 500 milliamps (0.5A) at the fuel relay solenoid circuit (specifically at Pin 13, connector CN2 on the instrument cluster).

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Check the dash for Level 1 Critical Warnings (e.g., high engine intake air-to-air temperature, high engine coolant temperature, low engine oil pressure, high transmission oil temperature) that intentionally trigger an engine shutdown

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the instrument cluster (Connector CN2, Pin 13) and the fuel shut-off relay for chafing, melting, or a short to ground

  3. Test the fuel shut-off relay and the fuel shut-off solenoid on the injection pump for internal shorts that would cause a current draw exceeding 500mA

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent further electrical damage.

  2. Access the Instrument Cluster

Remove the necessary dash panels to access the rear of the Instrumentation Controller.

  3. Isolate the Circuit

Locate Connector CN2 and identify Pin 13. Disconnect the harness.

  4. Trace for Shorts

Using a multimeter, check the wire running from Pin 13 to the fuel shut-off relay for continuity to ground. If a short to the chassis is found, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  5. Test/Replace the Relay

Locate the fuel shut-off relay (often found on the steering column or main relay panel). Test the relay pins for an internal short. Replace the relay if it fails testing.

  6. Test the Solenoid

If the relay and wiring are good, test the fuel shut-off solenoid mounted on the mechanical injection pump. An internally shorted solenoid coil will pull excessive amperage and trigger this code. Replace if defective.

  7. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect all components and the battery. Turn the key on, clear the fault codes from the INST module, and start the tractor to verify the code does not return.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Fuel Shut-Off Relay

    Generic standard CNH micro-relay

  • Fuel Shut-Off Solenoid

    HF83981012-HYC

Aftermarket replacement RAParts available for certain Case mechanical engines; verify fitment against specific injection pump

  • Instrumentation Controller (INST)

Only requires replacement if the internal driver at Pin 13 has been permanently burned out by the short circuit
