Case IH 131 – Engine Controller (ENG / ECM): Decelerator or Hand Throttle (STD cab) Position potentiometer voltage is too high

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the throttle position sensor (potentiometer) that exceeds the normal operating maximum limit. This condition typically points to a signal wire that is shorted to a high-voltage source (such as the 5V reference line or 12V battery power), a loss of the sensor ground, or an internally shorted/failed potentiometer.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the decelerator pedal or hand throttle potentiometer for damaged wires, chafing, or bent, loose, and corroded pins.

  2. Use a multimeter to check the signal voltage at the sensor connector to verify if the voltage is stuck at a high level (e.g., 5V) regardless of the throttle lever or pedal position.

  3. Disconnect the sensor and check the signal wire for a short to the 5V supply or 12V battery source.

  4. Verify that the sensor has a solid ground connection.

  5. Test the potentiometer's resistance sweep from the low idle to high idle positions. The resistance should change smoothly without dropping out or spiking.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the ignition key and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Locate the hand throttle or decelerator pedal potentiometer (usually located in the right fender console or at the base of the decelerator pedal in the cab, depending on which circuit triggered the fault).

  3. Disconnect and Inspect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the potentiometer. Clean any debris or corrosion from the contacts.

  4. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to power or a broken ground in the harness, locate the damaged section of the wire and repair it using proper splicing techniques, or replace the affected harness section.

  5. Replace the Sensor

    If the wiring is intact but the sensor failed the resistance/voltage sweep test, remove the mounting hardware holding the potentiometer in place and install a new OEM sensor.

  6. Reassemble and Reconnect

    Plug the harness back into the sensor and reconnect the battery.

  7. Calibration

    Turn the key on. On many Case IH models, you will need to perform a throttle potentiometer calibration procedure via the tractor's display monitor or service tool so the ECM learns the new low and high idle voltage limits.

  8. Clear Codes and Test

    Clear the fault codes and operate the throttle to ensure Code 131 does not return and the engine RPM responds correctly.
