Case IH 131 – Transmission Controller (TRANS / TCU): Mid range clutch is not calibrated

Issue description

This code indicates that the transmission controller does not have a valid calibration value stored for the mid-range clutch. This typically occurs if a previous calibration procedure was interrupted, failed to complete successfully, or if the transmission controller lost its memory. It can also appear after replacing transmission components like the clutch pack, solenoid, or the controller itself.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • Magnum Series
  • Magnum 180-340
  • Maxxum Series
  • MXM 120-190
  • Puma Series
  • Steiger / STX Series
  • TG Series
  • TG210
  • TG230
  • TG255
  • TG285
  • T8 series

Check the cause

  1. Check for related electrical faults (e.g., active solenoid fault codes like TRANS code 111 or 2348 indicating the mid-range clutch solenoid or wiring has failed).

  2. Check for internal leaks by monitoring transmission pressures (low pressure in speeds 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, R3, and R4 indicates mechanical mid-range clutch leakage).

  3. Verify transmission fluid temperature is between 60°C and 105°C (140°F - 221°F) as required for calibration.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare the Tractor

Park the vehicle on a flat, open surface free of obstacles. Engage the parking brake. Warning: The machine may move automatically during the calibration process.

  2. Warm the Transmission

Operate the tractor until the transmission oil temperature is above 60°C (140°F).

  3. Enter Configuration Mode

Turn the key switch to the ON position. Within 10 seconds, press and hold the "Enter" key on the keypad until the CONFIG MENU displays.

  4. Navigate to the TCU

Use the down arrow key to highlight TCU in the menu list, then press Enter.

  5. Access Transmission Setup

Press the down arrow until the ETC MENU screen displays, press Enter to access the TRANS VIEW screen, then arrow down to the TRANS SETUP screen and press Enter.

  6. Select Clutch Calibration

The Cltch Cal (clutch calibration) screen will display. Press Enter.

  7. Verify Temperature

The Oil Deg screen will report the current hydraulic fluid temperature in Celsius. If it is within the 60 - 105°C range, press Enter to proceed.

  8. Run Calibration

Follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the mid-range clutch. The controller will automatically modulate the solenoid to determine the precise fill time and hold pressure.

  9. Complete and Test

If the calibration completes successfully, the code will clear. If you receive a "U" error code (Calibration Error) during the process, consult the service manual for the specific U-code to identify the mechanical or electrical failure preventing calibration.

Parts you might need

Superseded / Alternate OEM Numbers: 87739558, 87729558R, 87690667, 87624294, 87577678, 85195038, 5196873, 5195038, 1931612. Used as a transmission control pulse-width modulation (PWM) solenoid across Case IH Magnum, Maxxum, Puma, Optum, and Vestrum series tractors.

  • Mid-Range Clutch Pack & Seals

Generic - specific part numbers depend heavily on the exact tractor serial number and transmission configuration. Required if diagnostic pressure tests indicate internal leakage.

  • Hydraulic Transmission Filters & Fluid

Generic. Recommended to change if clutch material has contaminated the fluid.
