Case IH 134 – TMF (Tractor Management Function) or AUX (Auxiliary Remote Controller): Aux 3rd Raise solenoid failed open or short circuit.

Issue description

The tractor's control module has detected an electrical anomaly in the circuit responsible for actuating the "Raise" function of the 3rd auxiliary hydraulic remote valve. The system expects a specific resistance range from the solenoid coil; if it detects infinite resistance (an open circuit/broken wire) or zero/very low resistance (a short circuit), it disables the function and logs this code to prevent electrical damage.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the 3rd auxiliary remote valve block at the rear hydraulic stack. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the "Raise" solenoid for chafing, rodent damage, or pinched wires. Check the connector for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins.

  2. Coil Resistance Test: Disconnect the electrical plug at the 3rd Aux Raise solenoid. Using a digital multimeter, measure the resistance across the two pins of the solenoid coil. An open reading (OL) means the internal coil wire is broken. A reading of 0 ohms means it is internally shorted. Both require replacement.

  3. Harness Voltage/Continuity Test: With the key ON (engine off), command the 3rd remote to the raise position. Check for proper voltage at the harness connector. Also, verify continuity on the ground wire back to the chassis.

  4. The "Swap" Test: To isolate the issue, swap the suspect 3rd Aux Raise solenoid coil with a known good coil from an adjacent valve (e.g., the 1st or 2nd Aux valve). If the fault code changes to match the new location (e.g., Aux 1st Raise or Aux 2nd Raise), the coil is definitively the culprit. If Code 134 persists, the issue is in the tractor's wiring harness or the TMF/AUX controller.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and cycle the remote levers/switches to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.

  2. Locate the Component

    Go to the rear hydraulic remote stack. Identify the 3rd valve slice and locate the "Raise" solenoid (refer to your specific model's operator manual if you are unsure which side of the slice is Raise vs. Lower).

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty solenoid.

  4. Remove the Coil

    Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem. Carefully slide the faulty electromagnetic coil off the hydraulic valve cartridge tube. (Note: You usually do not need to remove the hydraulic cartridge itself, meaning no hydraulic fluid should leak during this process).

  5. Install the New Coil

    Slide the new OEM solenoid coil over the valve stem.

  6. Secure

    Reinstall the retaining nut. Do not overtighten, as this can crack the plastic casing of the new coil or distort the valve stem.

  7. Reconnect and Clear

    Plug the electrical connector back in. Turn the tractor key to the ON position, clear the stored fault codes via the cab display, and test the 3rd remote for proper operation.
